High School Journalism Can Change the World

Student journalism can be about so much more than simply reporting on the school play and the football game. I will tell the story of the Student News Action Network, an online youth news service with contributors in more than 50 countries, and will share resources and techniques for teachers to empower their students to be effective digital storytellers.

Teachers will learn

  • Why student journalism is a great interdisciplinary teaching model that aligns with 21st century learning concepts
  • How they can use relevant, high-impact resources to teach with journalism
  • How their students can create a positive digital footprint

Mark Schulte

Education Director, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting
Mark Schulte taught global issues-based journalism in Washington, DC for nearly ten years, most recently founding an international network of high school reporters online with members in more than 50 countries contributing daily to a web publication devoted to their stories. Earlier he worked as a magazine writer and editor, covering politics and education in Virginia, and ultimately converted the magazine into a web journal of college life.
